And now it sits, like Ozymandias in the desert, wasting away next to a dumpster, ready to die like the last woolly mammoth on the plains, realizing the rest of its herd has already moved on to greener pastures. People would come for miles just to gaze upon the wonder of your couch. I mean, just look at it! It’s brilliant! Imagine what kind of conversation piece this couch would be if it was in your living room? It would be the talk of the town. It looked like it was extremely comfortable in its prime, but still ugly as anything. I noticed across the way was quite possibly the ugliest couch I have ever seen. The vehicle in question under the sign.īut as I pondered the name of the bar we were currently at, something else caught my eye. Secondlt, our rondezvous point was a bar called the Zzu. First off, I was pleased to hear I’d be traveling into every state from coast to coast, even if we didn’t see much of Washington. We found ourselves crossing into Washington State to sell my friend’s second car. My friend who lived here commented that he missed trees. Pictures are blurry because I accidentally deleted the originals, but trust me, you’re not missing much here. There was very little greenery among the dun-colored grass and dirt which seemed to surround us. The first thing I noticed when I arrived was how… potato-colored everything was. So, with little to report from yesterday, I present to you, as promised: Remember, kids, forest fires are no joke. It looked like it was mostly out, but there was smoke for miles. The only other thing of note during the drive was a forest fire blazing as we drove past. As we get further East, our drive times will lessen as we can see more novelties and other interesting attractions as there are more options for this along the way. In the end, driving won out, especially since we lost an hour to time zones.

Reading up on the history of the place, so many people from different denominations and cultures worked on this project that it has kind of become a national monument for mothers everywhere in the US, looking over everyone from afar, watching over all of us. We debated seeing Our Lady of the Rockies yesterday, but a) we weren’t sure my friends car would make it up the treacherous mountain road, and b) we could still see her from the highway, miles and miles away! Today marks the second of our “Long Drive” Days on this trip, but this time around we’re stopping for some side-trips along the way.

Your fearless author at the center of the nation.ĭoing a quick compass test, the directions coincided pretty well with what my phone said within 3 degrees, or Sadly, no points here for creativity, but to be fair, what else are you going to do atop a giant compass? Of course, like everyone else, we had to stand at the center and pose.

It’s surrounded by flags from every state, which is kind of nice, but otherwise, it’s mostly just grass.Ī bunch of people were crowding the monument, so we had to wait our turn to take pictures. They do a pretty good job of presenting and maintaining the monument. Daunting, because it reminded me just how much longer we still had to drive! Exciting because I knew I was surrounded on all side from our country. Thus, being in the center of the nation was both exciting and daunting. When it takes 8+ hours to cross across a state, it changes your perspective. So let me tell you, you don’t get a sense of how large our country actually is when you live in New England, where wherever you want to go is generally within 2 to 3 hours.

As such, our first stop was the Center of the Nation. Which was a good plan, considering how much construction we ran into. So, faced with 10+ hours of driving yesterday, we had to make a hard decision and cut Custer’s Last Stand.
